Release Something! Day IV: Discussion Thread!
Starless Umbra by dragonheartman CONTINUED
My enthusiasm for starless umbra is definitely waning.
The cause?
The lack of variety and the complete lack of challenge in the battles. I'm at the part near the annoying but fun mine cart minigame (impressive coding, btw!) and basically the only regular enemies I've fought so far are slimes and enemies that behave the same as slimes, hitting my characters for attacks that deal 4 damage (out of ~89-~147 HP!) or attacks that miss 80% of the time, and then die in two hits. The game has tons of custom systems for acquiring all kinds of new skills and abilities (admittedly, I still don't understand exactly how saps are used up as part of the gem system, and so far would suggestion cutting them out entirely, and I have numerous bugs report about the gem fusing...) but the problem is that literally all of the fights are too easy to REQUIRE using Gem techs or casting essences! The only difference having these skills learned makes is being able to effortlessly destroy pathetically non-threatening enemies one way or being able to effortlessly destroy pathetically non-threatening enemies another way.
THE ENEMIES REALLY, REALLY NEED WORK, THEY ARE RUINING ONE OF THE MOST POLISHED, PLAYABLE GAMES I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED IN RPGMAKER. Dragonheartman, ADDRESS THIS SHIT, DOG. KTHXBAI!

Anyone else tried Mage Duel/Shadowrun Missions? They're definitely not the most overlooked games, I know, but I feel like everything is at least slightly overlooked in the wake of the big dogs, SE:B, PL, and SU. And I feel like....two....people have played Shadowrun: Missions. :(
Also, I tried playing Hellucination again last night AND STILL CAN'T GET PAST THAT STUPID BOSS AFTER LIKE FIVE TRIES. Grrr. >:(

If I get twenty more people saying things equally as positive, I might consider reopening this game to development. Right now I sort of consider it overly ambitious and failed project #562. Maybe if I had a team of talented dudes working under me we could finish this, but I think it's beyond my ability to fly solo, even though the game itself was, ironically enough, only going to be 2-3 hours long, the branching paths and choices would have made it take literally thousands of man-hours of development time.
Then again, I've worked so much on it already. ::sigh:: Oh well.
